I am pale. Let’s just get that out in the open. High school was rough - wielding the power to blind those that dared to gaze at my dayglo white legs is not as much fun as it sounds. Finally, around the time I was 17, sunless tanners started to hit the market. Mall bound, I ran as fast as my pasty legs would carry me and bought my 1st tube of Lancome’s sunless tanner. Less than 24 hours later, I learned what it meant to look like a pumpkin and smell like a dumpster. Oh vanity…
Fast forward many years later…
Beautisol (formerly Antidote) was nice enough to send me some samples of their self tanner and I was pretty excited. They sent me their Summer Glow - Dark Self-Tanner and a bottle of All Seasons Glow - Gradual Self-Tanner . It is no shocker that I reached for the dark and fast bottle. Just by looking at the shade of the color guide, I knew this product was different from what I have tried in the past and I had no doubt the bar had been raised.
The color guide is a deep brown with no hint of orange at all. Encouraging already. Next, was the sniff test and wow! That is where the amazement really began. Beautisol is known for the technology they call “Smell Right” that encapsulates the odor and neutralizes it. According to the website, it cuts the typical odor by about 80%. Hmmm… I would say that might be understatement. I could not detect any self-tanner funk anywhere or at anytime with this product. THAT is awesome!
As any self-respecting tan faker knows, there is an appropriate amount of prep work to be done before we can slather on the sunshine. Skip this step and streaks are in your near future. So, we scrub and we scrub to remove any and all of any dead skin that might make our tans look less than perfect. I even pulled out my special exfoliator that I save for special occasions, Ahava’s goodie Gentle Body Exfoliator. Now that my skin was prepped and ready, it was time to apply the color. Unfortunately I kept running into blending issues.
The consistency of Summer Glow is a bit thin and while that is good for avoiding streaks and build up around elbows and ankles, it means I need some moisture to make it blend well. Not too much though - that could keep the tanner from being absorbed evenly. Enter the best lightweight lotion around, J.R. Watkins Aloe & Green Tea Lotion. It is the perfect weight for what I needed and once I put it on, the tanner blended much more easily. Oh and btw, the aloe & green tea lotion is my favorite scent but it is also available in Lemon Cream and Vanilla.
So waiting and wearing my birthday suit did not take as long as I expected. The color guide is a bit misleading in that the color you are left with is not like the guide. Don’t get me wrong, the color was not terrible. After I took a shower, the tan left behind looked pretty good. It was not too orange but but it was not the brown I hoped I would get. It looked wrong on my skin - as if I used a self-tanner for dark complexions. I think it would work beautifully for medium complexions but I don’t recommend it for fair skin like mine.
The good news is there are no worries about transfer. It dries pretty fast and once it is on, it is on! I have had no troubles with the color coming off on my clothes or sheets. In fact, the overall tan lasts at least two to three days longer than I am accustomed to from other brands. I am impressed with that, Beautisol!
So, the bottom line on Beautisol’s Summer Glow? I love the scent (or lackthereof), the color seems to be suited to olive skin and will most likely give you gorgeous results. The life of the color is absolutely the best I have ever used. If you do your prep work and use a light moisturizer beforehand, you will find yourself looking like a tanned goddess.
Beautisol’s website offers great instructional videos. They cover how-to’s for every area of your body and they even cover the really tricky places like your face and your hands. Even if you have never used self-tanner before, these videos will turn you into an expert in no time. There are a lot of other products available like an exfoliator, two shades of tanner, instructional DVD and even an applicator that is made for hard to reach areas. That has got to be worth it’s weight in gold.
